Glenn Murray better in defence than in attack, jokes Crystal Palace boss

CRYSTAL Palace boss Tony Pulis joked that Glenn Murray did better in defence than up front against Richmond Kickers on Monday night. The Eagles surprised everyone by naming the striker in the heart of defence alongside Peter Ramage – but Murray has played there before in training when coming back from his long-term injury in February. But Pulis was delighted the 30-year-old grabbed another pre-season goal in their 3-0 win and it will certainly give him a boost for a full season in the Premier League. "I thought he did a better job at centre-half then he has at centre-forward!," Pulis told www.cpfc.co.uk. "He won't like me saying that but he still scored which is good. He's a good lad and I've got a lot of time for Glenn. "He had a bad injury last year and has had to sit out most of the season. Obviously at the backend he came back in and did smashing for the club, he looked fitter and stronger again. "He has got another goal (in pre-season), which is what we need. "It was a great header from the corner against Richmond Kickers, a good finish."

Coulsdon bus stops to get new display boards

TWO bus stops in Coulsdon have been fitted with electronic boards showing when the next services are due to arrive.

The £10,000 boards were installed at the stops in Brighton Road near the railway station by Transport for London last week, after pressure from East Coulsdon Residents' Association.

Charlie King, from the association, said: "None of the bus stops in Coulsdon have the boards, so the advantage is we can now tell when the next one will arrive."

He added they would most likely benefit the elderly who perhaps would not have the benefit of smart phones to check timetables.

The boards, along with 10 years' upkeep, were paid for with community funds secured from the development of flats next to the station.

Dane Bowers arrives at court with girlfriend Miss Wales for rugby player Ian Gough's assault hearing

POP star Dane Bowers has this afternoon (Tuesday) arrived at Croydon Magistrates' Court, to support his girlfriend Sophia Cahill – a former Miss Wales.

Ex-Welsh rugby star Ian Gough is appearing at the court, charged with assaulting Ms Cahill at Bowers' home in Kingswood Way, South Croydon.

Gough, 37, who has been capped 64 times by his country, denies assault by beating.

His trial is due to begin at around 2.15pm.

Bowers, 34, has lived in the Croydon area for several years, having found fame in the late 1990s with boyband Another Level. He also worked on a couple of garage tracks with Spice Girl Victoria Beckham.

Green Flag award for Wandle Park and 12 other Croydon spaces

A REVAMPED park has been awarded an environmental quality mark.

Wandle Park has achieved the much-prized Green Flag stamp of quality from the Keep Britain Tidy charity.

The park recently had a major makeover, including the restoration of the River Wandle to the surface, a new skate park and a refurbished cafe.

Clive Playfair, a volunteer at the Wandle Park Community Garden, said: "The redeveloped park is great.

"Projects like the community garden and the festivals we put on are a great way to get involved with the local community."

Seven other Croydon Council-run parks, which already had the Green Flag, have retained the honour for another year; South Norwood Lake, Wettern Tree Garden, Coulsdon Memorial Ground, Coombe Wood, Lloyd Park, Happy Valley, and Haling Grove.

Farthing Down, and Coulsdon, Riddlesdown and Kenley Commons, all of which are managed by the City of London Corporation, have also retained Green Flags, as has Croydon Cemetery - meaning the borough has 13 Green Flag-approved parks in total.

Councillor Timothy Godfrey, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, said: "These flags are a testament to the hard work of the council's green spaces team and our grounds maintenance staff.

"We're keen that more of the borough's parks and open spaces meet the green-flag standard in the coming years."

Trialist defender gets final chance to impress Crystal Palace

CRYSTAL Palace's Development Squad travel to Dulwich Hamlet tonight and trialist Sam Magri will be hoping to put in an impressive performance. The former QPR defender, who has represented England at youth level, helped the young Eagles keep a clean sheet on Friday when they drew 0-0 against Havant and Waterlooville. Development boss Gary Issott believes Magri has a chance to impress the manager in tonight's fixture – and then it will be down to first team boss Tony Pulis to call the shots. Issott told the Advertiser: "He's done really well. I think if he does well again at Dulwich we'll perhaps try and keep him a bit longer and maybe expose him to the manager. "That's what the job really is, it's to select out the trialists and fine tune them into some serious contenders for the manager to make a decision on them. "In the end it will be the manager who will makes the call on any players we get at this level."

FAN VIEW: It's all about Marouane Chamakh for Crystal Palace next season

PALACE fan Dan Gibbs is currently on work experience this week with the Advertiser sports desk and has given us his view on how Palace will do next season… Predicted second favourites to go down at the start of the 2012/13 season in the Championship. Predicted favourites to go down last season. The outcome? Palace go up via the play-offs. Palace finish 11th in the Premier League. The phrase "defying the odds" is somewhat built into Palace's mindsets; the club, the players and the fans. Not even the most optimistic of Palace fans could have predicted an 11th place finish last year but we can't get cocky. Staying up will again be the main priority this season. There are still a lot of teams that are all at a similar level and anyone can beat anyone in the bottom half of the table. There will be a few of us who'll want us to be challenging for a top half finish but if we're staying grounded, avoiding the drop and doing so without the stress of going into the final games will be enough for Palace this season. Of course we'd love a few upsets against the big four and doing the double over any of our London rivals would go a long way. A cup run would be nice too. But is that asking for too much? So far we haven't had too much to rant and rave about in the transfer window, Fraizer Campbell will be a welcomed addition to our squad but I am more excited about Marouane Chamakh staying at the club. There's no doubt about it, Chamakh has one of the worst haircuts a footballer has ever seen. A tub of hair gel, a bit of a comb-over and a ruffle through with his hands looks to be the pre-match routine for the Moroccan striker. But let's discuss his footballing abilities, shall we? The giggles begin. "What footballing ability?" a non-Palace fan would laugh. "The same footballing ability that you have not witnessed all season," a Palace fan would argue back. People mocked Palace when Ian Holloway signed Chamakh back in August 2013 but the truth is he played a pivotal role in keeping Palace up last season. It wasn't just his five goals and two assists in 32 appearance that helped Palace, his playing style helped Palace improve massively on the pitch. Of course he can be a bit clumsy in some situations on the pitch, falling over at the wrong time, trying to be too clever when at times a simple pass is all that's needed and his decision to go down in the box against Southampton looking for a penalty when he was in a position to score was crazy. Despite this, the 30-year-old striker is a technically gifted individual. Skilful and powerful on the ball with great control, he has played brilliantly in the number 10 role for the Eagles. Whether it be holding the ball up to play it off to the pacey wingers of Yannick Bolasie and Jason Puncheon or tracking back to complete his defensive duties, Chamakh is definitely a team player. Perhaps too unselfish at times. His confidence will be at an all-time high having recently signed a new two-year deal at Palace and given the chance I think he will flourish in the top-flight next season. In the end, it doesn't matter who gets our goals as long as we get those vital points and defy the odds again. Palace are currently 11/4 to be relegated in case you were wondering.

Motorbike rider injured in collision with car

A MOTORCYCLIST was taken to King's College Hospital in Denmark Hill this afternoon (Tuesday) after his bike was in collision with a car in South Norwood Hill, South Norwood. Police said the rider, who is believed to be in 20s, suffered only minor injuries in the accident which occurred at around 1.30pm. Traffic was delayed while police dealt with the accident but was flowing freely by mid-afternoon.

Welsh rugby star Ian Gough found guilty of assaulting former Miss Wales Sophia Cahill at Croydon home of pop star Dane Bowers

AN INTERNATIONAL rugby player has been convicted of assaulting a former Miss Wales at the Croydon home of ex-boyband singer Dane Bowers. Ex-Welsh rugby star Ian Gough appeared at Croydon Magistrates' Court this afternoon (Tuesday) having denied assault by beating at an earlier hearing. It was alleged the 37-year-old, capped 64 times by Wales, attacked his former partner Sophia Cahill – a former winner of Miss Wales now engaged to Bowers – at the Another Level singer's home in Kingswood Way, South Croydon, on January 4 this year. Miss Cahill sobbed as she told the court how Gough had assaulted her as he returned their two-year-old son Gabriel, of whom they share custody, an hour late in his white VW campervan. "I opened the passenger door and Ian just stormed round the front of the van, I was a little bit taken aback," she said. "I went to get my son out his car seat. As I was unbuckling Gabriel, Ian grabbed me by the shoulder and chucked me back. He said 'get away'. "I went to get him again and Ian grabbed me by the shoulder and flung me into the side of the door." Miss Cahill said it aggravated a back injury she sustained in a car crash some days before. About 10 minutes later she called police and Bowers sent Gough an angry text, which read: "Did you just lay your f****** hands on Sophie (sic)?" Bowers told the court he had been watching from the window of his home. "He basically grabbed Sophia and moved her away from the car. He had no reason or permission to grab her. He said he felt "frustrated and a little bit useless" while watching on. "Until she got to me, I didn't realise she was crying," he added. Mark Haslan, defending, said Gough did not attack Miss Cahill, but instead told her not to lift their son because of her back injury and accused her of being abusive and swearing. But she denied this, saying: "There is absolutely no way I can imagine Ian offering any kind of help to me." Chairman of the bench Terry Carpenter said the magistrates' had found the evidence of Bowers and Miss Cahill "convincing". Speaking as they left the court Gough's father Malcolm said he and his son "strongly disagree" with the verdict, calling it an "absolute travesty of justice". Gough is due to be sentenced at the court on August 26. Bowers, 34, has lived in the Croydon area for several years, having found fame in the late 1990s with boyband Another Level. He also worked on a couple of garage tracks with Spice Girl Victoria Beckham.

Gordon Banks: It will be even tougher for Crystal Palace and Tony Pulis next season

ENGLAND legend Gordon Banks reckons keeping Crystal Palace in the Premier League for a second year in a row could be an even bigger achievement for Tony Pulis following their miraculous survival last season. The Eagles looked dead and buried which Banks insists was the perfect situation for the former Stoke City manager to come into – and Pulis certainly took the bull by the horns to initiated a remarkable turnaround in fortunes. As an ex-player at Stoke, Banks continues to take a keen interest in the fortunes of his former club. And having watched his team both fly high and struggle under Pulis the 1966 World Cup winner has his reservations over Palace's chances of kicking on this season, admitting that another season safe in the Premier League would be a huge achievement. "I think it probably will be an even tougher job this season to keep them in the league," said Banks, who was speaking as an ambassador at the StreetGames Football Pools Fives programme which takes football to underprivileged young people in the UK. "The enthusiasm comes with a new manager and everyone pulling together up the table saying we can do this lads. But when the new season starts and it is the same old faces again it can be a bit harder. "But he [Pulis] has been terrific for them. They got the right man who could drag them out of relegation which is what they wanted. "He was the right man because with the more defensive game he played where they were losing before they were getting a point and then they started to win and before they knew it they were creeping up the league." Purley-based football team donates kits to kids in Africa

A CHILDREN'S football team based in Purley has helped to spread a little happiness to underprivileged youngsters in Ghana.

Shelton Athletic, who play their matches at Riddlesdown School, donated football kits to children at The Noyaa Association School, based in Jamestown, one of the most deprived areas of Ghana's capital, Accra.

The school was founded in 2012, as a project to lift the next generation of children out of poverty and give them a chance at a better future through education and sport.

Having heard about this project, William Tambling, chairman of Shelton Athletic, decided he wanted to give the children, and teachers, something to smile about - so on a recent business trip to the area, he stopped at the school armed with dozens of children's Shelton Athletic football kits.

William said: "There were many happy faces as the kids rushed to show their parents and friends.

"In Jamestown, a small gesture can make a huge difference."

London Bridge closure set to hit Croydon commuters hard at the end of August

CROYDON commuters travelling to or through London Bridge are being warned to expect severe delays and disruption at the end of August.

Between August 23 and 31, there will be no direct trains from Brighton, Gatwick Airport, Three Bridges and East Croydon to the London station, as work continues on its multi-million pound rebuild.

Network Rail has warned that during the period, which takes in four working days and a Bank Holiday weekend, East Croydon Station will be busier than usual.

The London Overground is also expected to be busy, as passengers seek alternative means of getting to the capital - though services will not be able to operate to and from New Cross from August 26-29. These services will be diverted to Crystal Palace to double the number of London Overground trains serving stations between Sydenham and Brockley, which will temporarily not be served by Southern. A replacement bus service will also run every 15 minutes between New Cross and Canada Water.

Stephen Norris, East Croydon station manager, said his team were "ready" for the influx of extra passengers and would be using the same forward planning tactics adopted during the Olympic Games.

Nicky Hughes, from Network Rail, said: "We are doing as much of the construction work as we can behind the scenes, but there will be times, such as this August, when we have to temporarily divert services around the track we're replacing.

"There are alternative routes for everyone affected and we urge passengers across London and south east to visit our new website, check if you are affected and then find out your alternative routes so you know your travel options."

Passengers are also being warned to expect more delays in December and then at various points up to January 2018, as the London Bridge work continues.

The August work at London Bridge - the latest phase of a wholesale redevelopment of the station - will include a vast amount of track and signalling work, to bring the currently closed platforms 12 and 13 back into use. Platforms 10 and 11 will be closed for demolition and rebuilding.

Arsenal forward rejects loan move to Crystal Palace

ARSENAL forward Serge Gnabry is understood to have rejected a move to Crystal Palace on Tuesday. The 19-year-old made 14 appearances for the north London outfit last season, scoring one goal and winning a penalty against Palace in Arsenal's 2-0 win at Selhurst Park. Gnabry signed a five-year contract with Arsenal in October 2013 but with the Gunners signing Alexis Sanchez and wingers Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain coming back to fitness, he could be tempted with a move elsewhere. The Germany youth international has been linked with Southampton, Newcastle, Sunderland and even Borussia Dortmund this summer. Tony Pulis had reportedly taken an interest in the attacking midfielder as the boss looks to bolster his squad with signing at least three more players, including a centre-back before the season starts. Palace have also been linked with Steven Nzonzi of Stoke City after he has reportedly handed in a transfer request in May for the second consecutive season. The 25-year-old played under Pulis in his time at the club and has remained a key figure for the Potters, making 40 appearances last season as they finished two places above the Eagles in ninth. Reports are also circulating that Palace and Swansea are interested in Southampton midfielder Jack Cork. Cork could become the latest player to depart Southampton in what is turning out to be a miserable summer for Saints fans.

Crystal Palace supremo confirms plans for big screen at Selhurst Park

Crystal Palace fans have been calling for it more than ever this summer - and it seems they could be granted their wish. Co-chairman Steve Parish has confirmed the club have come up with rough ideas of erecting a new giant screen at the Whitehorse Lane end to replace the current one, which is dated and weary-looking. Palace have been very busy tidying up their stadium over the summer, with new seats going in, alongside a new pitch, undersoil heating and perimeter surfacing and drainage. Parish confirmed the big screen plans on Twitter to a fan, while he posted an artists' impression on Instagram too.
