Croydon rapper mourns loss of 'inspirational' grandad

A HIP-HOP artist from South Croydon who sampled his grandad's music has paid tribute to his "inspiration" after he passed away.

Ryan Junior Matthews-Robinson produced a charity single two years ago using the music of his grandad Robbie "King" Robinson.

Robbie, 74, died suddenly of a heart attack earlier this month but Ryan has plans to ensure his legacy remains through music.

"The power of music is that you can live forever through it," said Ryan.

"I originally sampled his music because I thought more people should hear it and I want to keep his legacy alive."

"He wasn't just a grandad, he was a best friend too. He couldn't have been more of an inspiration to me."

Ryan, who raps under the name Ragz-CV, is putting together a special video tribute to Robbie after students from University of the Arts London came to document their collaboration.

Robbie moved to the UK from Jamaica in 1962 and recorded six albums, spanning the reggae, jazz and soul genres, eventually settling in South Norwood.

He befriended American jazz musician Jimmy Smith and the two toured together.

When not creating music he worked as a London cab driver, retiring in the 2000s.

But Ryan's own musical career spurred him out of retirement for their collaboration in 2011 entitled Paying Homage to the King, which helped to raise thousands of pounds for the Alzheimer's Society.

Before Robbie passed away, Ryan visited to play him his latest single Summer Days, Summer Nights, which also used one of Robbie's originals.

"He was saying how proud he was, and I made the original better," he added.

"He still had that ear to what was good."

Despite suffering from diabetes and having to look after his wife Mary, who suffers from dementia, Ryan said Robbie always kept in high spirits, adding: "He never felt hard done by.

"He was always a positive person."

Coulsdon school gets £1.6m cash boost for new science labs

WORK to completely transform Woodcote High School's science department will start this summer after it won a £1.6 million grant.

The Coulsdon school's 11 science laboratories were originally built in the 1950s and are in "dire" need of refurbishment, according to head Mark Southworth.

They will be replaced by "state-of-the-art" facilities built using funds secured through the Education Funding Agency (EFA), part of the Department for Education.

Work on the new classrooms will get under way this summer.

Mr Southworth hailed the success of the bid, led by the school's site manager Steve Callan, as a "phenomenal achievement".

"The quality of the bid has resulted in this huge injection of funding for Woodcote," he said.

"Students can look forward to carrying out their science experiments in laboratories that will be the envy of other institutions."

As part of the work, three new laboratories will be built alongside a sports science room. The other nine labs will be refurbished in stages to avoid disrupting lessons.

The new labs will replace temporary ones built as the school expanded, and work is expected to be completed by June 2015.

Mr Southworth said the facilities would hugely benefit pupils at the school.

"They are really motivated by the practical aspects of science and carrying out their own experiments really helps them to learn and retain scientific concepts," he added. "We are sure that these labs will help us go from strength to strength academically."

The grant was one of the largest awarded from the EFA fund of £394 million, which was four times oversubscribed.

The fund is designed to provide capital finance for academies since they are no longer under the control of the Local Education Authority.

Woodcote High became an academy in June 2012.

CRYSTAL Palace registered the first victory of their U.S tour with a 1-0 win over Philadelphia Union. A first half Ethan White own goal helped Palace to success over a side who have lost just once in their last 11 games. White headed into his own net on 20 minutes, under pressure from Marouane Chamakh. Palace dominated the game and should have won more comfortably, but Yannick Bolasie and Dwight Gayle both missed golden chances, with the hosts keeper Andre Blake in impressive form. Tony Pulis made a host of substitutions in the second half, with fringe players such as Barry Bannan and Adlene Guedioura, and youngsters like Hiram Boateng given the chance to shine. Only keeper Julian Speroni - having been subbed at half-time for Wayne Hennessey in the 2-2 draw against Columbus Crew - played the full 90 minutes.Crystal Palace starting XI: Speroni; Ward, Dann, Delaney, Jerome Williams; Puncheon, Jedinak, Ledley, Bolasie; Chamakh, Gayle. Forget Cannes - South Norwood and Thornton Heath to get their own film festival

MOVE over Cannes - South Norwood and Thornton Heath are aiming to steal the French Riviera's thunder with a film festival of their own.

The South Norwood and Thornton Heath Free Film Festival will take place from October 25-November 1 with help from London-wide community group Free Film Festivals.

Roney Henderson, the driving force behind the new festival, said she was inspired after attending a Free Film Festivals meeting in Peckham.

Roney, who lives in South Norwood after moving there from Thornton Heath, said: "I studied film at City University London and have always been a huge fan of cinema.

"I went to the planning meeting for the free film festival for Peckham and Nunhead and came away thinking I wanted to be a part of it but that there probably wasn't any space for me.

"So I just thought, 'why not hold one where I live?'."

Roney organised planning meetings at Stanley Halls, which have all been attended by more than ten people and has formed a planning committee.

After plugging the idea online, venues including South Norwood's Stanley Halls, Thornton Heath's Scratchley Hall and Norbury Park Lawn Tennis Club have volunteered to stage events.

Roney said: "We're going to have different-themed evenings and show lots of popular films such as a [Quentin] Tarantino night. He's one of my favourite directors.

"But we will also have cult evenings and we want to have an evening where we just show work from local film-makers.

"There's a lot of talent here – I would love to see a young local filmmaker come out of this having been discovered by people."

Neil Johns, one of the founders of Free Film Festivals, has helped new festivals get off the ground in locations such as Herne Hill, Westminster and London Fields, providing the organisers with equipment and advice.

He said: "I'm very excited this is going to get off the ground. These are sort of postcode festivals and can be very popular."

Roney is also hoping for more involvement from the Thornton Heath community.

"At the moment it's quite South Norwood-centric. If we got both communities involved together it could be great for the area."

Removal man sacked after being caught on camera fly-tipping

A REMOVAL man has been sacked after a teenager caught him on camera using a company van to fly-tip. The man and two friends unloaded unwanted furniture from a BMS Transport van and dumped it on the side of the road in Kemp Gardens, Broad Green, last weekend. They were unaware they were being photographed by Craig Charlton, who had spotted what they were doing from his bedroom window. The 17-year-old then posted the pictures on Facebook and, within less than an hour, the owner of the Wimbledon-based company had ordered his employee to clear the mess. Siva Theepan, director of BMS Transport, said the man had been sacked after a disciplinary meeting the following day. Craig's actions have been hailed by a council official as exactly what the public should do when they spot someone fly-tipping. The teenager was in his bedroom at 8.48pm on Sunday when he noticed a van pull up on the opposite side of the road. He told the Advertiser: "I saw some guys struggling to get something out of a van. Then I realised it was sofa and I knew they were fly-tipping. "I started taking pictures of them because the area has a lot of problems with that sort of thing. I took pictures of them unloading the van, leaving the rubbish and driving off. "I texted my aunt and told her I had some pictures of people fly-tipping and she said I should put them on Facebook to warn people the company is doing this." Craig uploaded the pictures to the New Addington Pathfinders page, prompting a member of the public to complain directly to BMS Transport. "While I was being talked through how to report it to the council, the men came back," said Craig. "I started taking pictures again but, because it was dark, they saw the flash. They started shouting at me. They were being quite rude. "Because I couldn't get any decent pictures I went out into the garden and started taking more pictures. They started calling me a c*** and a w*****. Then one of them started threatening me, saying: 'I know where you live, I'm going to come and get you.' "I didn't stop because I knew I needed to get a decent enough picture of them and their vehicle so they get prosecuted." Mr Theepan, co-owner of BMS Transport, said the employee had used the van outside working hours. He said: "As soon as I found out I called him in first thing [on Monday] for a disciplinary," he said. "We asked him why he did it, why he humiliated us. We've worked so hard to build up a reputation and now he has put it down the drain. He said he was off-loading it for a pal who was going to pick it up, but we didn't think that was credible. He was caught red-handed. "We've now dismissed him because what he did was totally unacceptable. It is in no way what we practise practice and I would like to apologise on behalf of the company." Craig has since reported the fly-tipping and the threatening behaviour to the police. Labour councillor Simon Hall praised him for his actions. He said: "The more that people feel able to come forward and report then the more we're going to be able to nail the perpetrators and stop this happening in our borough. "I hope this is a lesson to people who think they can get away with it."

THE capture of Fraizer Campbell means Crystal Palace boss Tony Pulis now has plenty of striking options.

Campbell joins record signing Dwight Gayle, club legend Glenn Murray and former Arsenal man Marouane Chamakh at the club, alongside a host of attacking options in the wide areas such as Yannick Bolasie, Jason Puncheon, Barry Bannan, and Jonny Williams.

The presence of so many attacking and wide midfield players could lead Tony Pulis to play just one man striker but, on the basis he plays two up top, we want to know who you'd like to see leading the line for Palace.

Do you like the idea of natural goalscorers Murray and Gayle playing together, or perhaps favour Chamakh's link-up skills? Or does new boy Campbell figure in your ideal Eagles strikeforce?

Please vote in our poll at the bottom of this page - and we'll reveal the results later this week.

Paedophile who changed name is spared jail sentence

A CONVICTED paedophile who sexually abused two young girls in Thornton Heath in the early 1980s has been spared jail despite failing to tell police he had changed his name.

Stanley Kissoon, 71, who now lives in Birkenhead, Wirral, was jailed for 15 years in 2003 for the assaults on two girls aged nine and 11 at a house in Thornton Heath, between 1979 and 1982.

Kissoon, who used to live at Rowland Court, Addiscombe, changed his name by deed poll to Stanley Herrman last August.

But despite changing the name on his driving licence and bank account, he failed to tell police until they were notified of the change and interviewed him.

Kissoon pleaded guilty at Wirral Magistrates' Court earlier this month to failing to tell police he had changed his name – an offence linked to the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

After his release from prison, Kissoon moved to the Wirral in 2012 to get away from his past but has been subject to a poster campaign and threats from his neighbours.

He had been sentenced to 15 years in prison for two counts of rape and six years, to run concurrently, for indecent assault and for two counts of indecency with a child.

His victims had contacted the police when they met up 15 years later and told each other about their ordeals.

Kissoon denied the attacks and claimed they were fabricated, but after being found guilty it emerged he had two previous convictions for indecent assaults on two other girls in 1983.

At Wirral Magistrates' Court on Tuesday (July 22), Kissoon was sentenced to nine weeks in custody, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to complete 120 hours unpaid work in the community.

He must also comply with a six-month supervision order.

Head happy to unwind after 39 years in Croydon schools

A HEAD teacher who has devoted most of her working life to education in Croydon is standing down after a decade at the helm of a unique school.

Janet Godfrey has been head at Winterbourne Junior Girls, in Thornton Heath - the only all-girls state primary school in the country - for the past 11 years.

Her retirement brings to an end a teaching career which spans 39 years, most of which have been spent in Croydon.

She came to Winterbourne in 2003 after serving for three years as head of Anerley Primary School, where she was instrumental in lifting the school out of special measures.

Before that she taught at a number of schools across the borough including Gilbert Scott Infants in Selsdon, Hayes Primary in Kenley, Rowdown Primary in New Addington, Spring Park Primary in Shirley and Forestdale Primary.

Miss Godfrey said: "I came here because I needed a new challenge and the school wanted somebody who had already been a head teacher."

It is a decision she has never regretted.

Miss Godfrey said: "The school is very multicultural, we have children from all over the world here. It is also very much part of the community and has a lot of tradition; grandmothers, mothers and now their daughters have all come here."

One thing Miss Godfrey has taken a particular pride in is developing technology teaching in the school, which now boasts two computer suites for use by the pupils.

She said: "It is known that in a mixed school girls don't always have the same opportunities to have a turn on the computers as the boys do.

"Overall though you forget about this being a girls school.

"The children here are just pupils and we are working with them to help them achieve their best.

"We try to do everything for the good of the children, we want them all to reach their full potential."

Miss Godfrey said retirement was a big decision but one she is comfortable with.

She said: "I am going to miss the children and the company but am now 60 and I just thought it is my time to step down."

Miss Godfrey said she intended to keep busy after leaving the school and one of her first priorities is to travel.

She has also booked up a Baltic cruise and trips to Boston and Iceland.

Miss Godfrey be helping out at Addington Methodist Church, where she already teaches in the Sunday school.

D-Day veteran Burt responds to nursery's call for a war hero

PARENTS at a nursery which wanted a veteran to be guest of honour for the opening of their memorial garden found their man – after a kind Advertiser reader came forward to help.

Louisa Middleweek, head of the PTA at Castle Day Nursery in Sanderstead, launched an appeal last week for a veteran to honour the opening of the garden.

Within hours of the paper hitting the shops, Louisa was contacted by Croydon's Deputy Lieutenant Colonel Ian McRobbie, who knew just the man to fit the bill.

He put the PTA in touch with 94-year-old Burt Smith, a lifetime Sanderstead resident, who helped storm the beaches on D-Day.

Burt cut the ribbon at the grand opening of the garden at the village's memorial hall on Saturday and was the centre of attention at the summer fayre afterwards.

Louisa was amazed with the quick response to her appeal.

"It was always going to be a long shot, but we were absolutely delighted," she said.

"We had a great day and having Burt there to open the garden made it very special.

"After he cut the ribbon all the children ran past to go and have fun."

Louisa said she sought out a veteran because the hall was built to honour those who died in the First World War.

She added: "Burt was absolutely great, chatting to everyone.

"He had fascinating stories to tell and he was showing the young children his medals."

Burt, who lives on his own after his wife passed away recently, said he particularly enjoyed opening the garden as his grandfather had been a gardener.

Now Louisa intends to invite him to all the PTA's future events and one of the garden's flower pot men has even been named 'Burt' in his honour.

Around 300 people attended the opening and fayre, helping to raise £1,020 for the nursery.

"We didn't expect to raise that much," said Louisa. "Parents have been so kind and done so much. Everyone's been doing something to help.

"The staff are so enthusiastic and have been so behind the fayre."

Crystal Palace defender delighted to be back after hamstring woe

CRYSTAL Palace defender Ryan Inniss was delighted to make his first appearance after nearly five months out with a hamstring injury on Friday evening. Having been named in the club's Development Squad to face Havant and Waterlooville, the centre-back was given a few minutes at the end – as a striker. But fans heading to the game against Dulwich Hamlet on Tuesday can expect Inniss to be back in his normal position for around 30 minutes or so as he gradually ups his game time. "I wasn't sure whether I was going to get a cameo or not, but at this stage of the season it's key to get a bit of fitness," the 19-year-old told the Advertiser. "I may have only got around five minutes or so at the end but it's good to be back. Four to five months is a long time so it's good to be back among the lads and training. "The gaffer Tony Pulis will be getting reports back so everyone will be doing the best they can. "Fitness is fitness, Gary Issott (Academy boss) asked if I wanted to go on up front so I was happy to get up there and work myself. "The hamstring is feeling better, it's strong and there is still a bit of scar tissue so I'll just be gradually upping my minutes in the next few games, starting at Dulwich hopefully."Follow me on Twitter @MR_LWMedia for interviews, matchday tweets and news on CPFC.

GLENN Murray and Dwight Gayle should be Tony Pulis' first-choice strikeforce this season, according to results of an Advertiser poll. Just under a third of those responding opted for a Gayle/Murray axis, ahead of the next most popular combination of Dwight Gayle and Marouane Chamakh (24 per cent of votes). The least popular option, according to our poll, was a pairing of Murray and new boy Fraizer Campbell, who joined Palace from Cardiff at the end of last week. Here are the poll results: Gayle & Murray: 31% Gayle & Chamakh: 24% Gayle & Campbell: 19% Chamakh & Campbell: 14% Murray & Chamakh: 7% Murray & Campbell: 6%

CRYSTAL Palace striker Glenn Murray is being linked with a move to Championship side Bolton - which would see him reunited with ex-boss Dougie Freedman.

Various reports today suggest Freedman would like to take the 31-year-old marksman either on loan or on a permanent deal.

Murray bagged 31 goals in Palace's promotion season but was forced to sit out much of the last campaign in the Premier League, after suffering a serious knee injury in the first-leg of the play-off semi-final against former club Brighton.

Tony Pulis has new signing Fraizer Campbell, Marouane Chamakh, and Dwight Gayle competing for striking spots, but reaction on Twitter today suggests most Palace fans would be unhappy to see Murray leave.

@HLTCO Tweeted: "I cannot see the club willingly letting Murray go, especially to Bolton. It would annoy so many of our fans. PR suicide."

@Eaglesince98 said: "Go away Freedman, Murray isn't going anywhere."

Snake missing for four months turns up in pensioner's toilet

ONE Sanderstead lady had a Sunday night shock when she went to use her bathroom and found a snake in her toilet. It turned out the reptile belonged to another neighbour upstairs - but had been missing for four months. Michael Eva said his neighbour, pensioner Mary Curtis, "looked like she'd seen a ghost" when she knocked on his door for help last night, but rather than a ghoul it was a black and white striped serpent she'd spotted. Amazed at what she told him, Michael went next door to see for himself. "This head, with the forked tongue, just poked out the toilet bowl, it freaked us all out," he said. Weighing down the lid of the toilet to keep the snake inside, they retreated to Michael's flat to call for help. But the RSPCA said they couldn't send anyone to help until the morning, and warned them to contact the police if it was venomous. "I called the police and they said they haven't got any snake-catching equipment," said Michael. When Michael popped back to try and identify the serpent, to see how dangerous it was, he was shocked to find it had moved to the bath. "I thought how the hell did it get in there? And realised it must have gone through the u-bend and the plumbing." They taped Mary's bathroom door shut and Michael, 34, taped up all the plumbing in his own flat, afraid it would find its way through the pipes and frighten his two-year-old daughter Jessica. When the RSPCA arrived this morning, the snake was hiding under the bath. After knocking on other doors in the flats near Sanderstead Railway station they discovered it belonged to neighbour Alex. Alex said it had been missing for at least four months. He helped coax the snake from its hiding spot with defrosted mice. Michael said Alex told him it was a California Kingsnake, a non-venomous snake normally found in Mexico and the USA. "I can sort of see the humour in it now, but at the time it was like 'there's a snake in the toilet!' It was frightening," he added.

TWO teenagers who set fire to a derelict building caused the death of a homeless man they didn't know was sleeping inside. A 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl were found guilty of the manslaughter of Sylwester Mendzelewski and arson at Croydon Crown Court on Friday (July 25). They set a blaze in the former headquarters of the Croydon Sea Cadets in Davenant Road, Waddon, on June 10 last year. Mr Mendzelewski, 35, was found dead inside the building after the fire was put out. A post mortem revealed he died of smoke inhalation. The pair, who were 14 and 16 respectively at the time of the fire, cannot be named for legal reasons. They are due to be sentenced at Croydon Crown Court on Wednesday (July 30).

ANIMAL lovers are being urged to provide cats with a loving home after a charity said it was "bursting at the seams" with homeless moggies.

Cats Protection's Croydon Branch says it has reached "crisis point" with volunteers are finding it increasingly difficult to re-home more than 100 kittens.

Heather McCann, from Croydon Cats Protection, said: "As a result of unneutered cats breeding, we have recently taken in many more pregnant cats and unwanted and abandoned kittens than usual.

"With over 100 cats already in our care, we are desperately looking for new owners to provide homes for these cats and kittens. I would appeal to anyone who can offer a loving home to contact us as soon as possible.

"It really is at crisis point as we have no more room."

The Croydon branch is currently offering to pay for the cost of neutering cats for people on low incomes, as an incentive to get more people to adopt.

If you can offer a home to a needy cat or kitten, contact Croydon Cats Protection on 020 8668 2127 or e-mail homing@croydoncpcats.org.uk

GLENN Murray won't be leaving Crystal Palace for Bolton - if you believe his better half. Reports on Monday suggested the Palace striker could be off to the Championship side, to team up once again with former Eagles boss Dougie Freedman. But Murray's wife Stacey appeared to rule this out on Twitter on Monday evening, writing: "Bolton? Where do people pluck these rumours from?" Murray, for his part, is currently with the rest of the Palace squad in the U.S.A ahead of tonight's game with Richmond Kickers.
