WHEN IT consultant Rob Ward decided to join the runners competing in the Brighton marathon earlier this month he set himself a target of raising £500.
But as the totting up process goes on Mr Ward, from Purley, has found his donations have already reached £2,000 and he expects them to rise to £2,500 over the next few weeks.
He was running for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, a charity which takes young people recovering from cancer, sailing to help them rebuild their confidence after long periods of treatment.
If Mr Ward reaches the £2,500 mark it will be enough to pay for five young people to join the trust's summer sailing trips.
Mr Ward said: "I have never run a marathon before and I've never raised this amount of money for charity - I'm speechless on both counts.
"A recent sailing holiday has really been the inspiration for choosing the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. I have a fondness of yachting so I think the charity's work is a really good fit."
Mr Ward joined more than 9,000 people in the marathon and was joined himself for the last 200 metres by his young children Toby and Holly.
