OUR piece on Croydon apparently being home to London's 'nicest' people didn't go down well with everyone.
When we posted this story on social media, some Advertiser readers were quick to disagree with the report's findings:
@jon_ellacott, on Twitter, wrote: Most grey and boring place. Lived here 35 years and would be quite happy to move away.
While Jay Doubleu, on Facebook, said rather sarcastically: "There could be a number of reasons. They only interviewed people from Shirley and Purley. Those they spoke to happened to be in Croydon but were from Surrey, Beckenham and West Wickham."
But we at the Advertiser firmly believe Croydon's people are fully deserving of the 'nice' tag.
Don't believe us? Here's just three examples to help change your mind..
Sisters Millie and Izzie Timmins, aged eight and six, from Old Coulsdon sprang into action last November after a Poppy Appeal tin was stolen from their favourite fish and chip shop. The pair raised more than £50by asking friends and family to donate, money which was given to Danny's fish and chip shop, in Old Coulsdon, to replace the stolen donations.
Five days a week, for ten hours a day, Harry Okaine, aka Prince Harry of Ghana, is to be found smiling and waving to motorists passing him on the Purley Way. Harry's job is to hold a sign promoting a nearby scrapyard, but he has taken responsibility for bringing a little cheer to weary motorists, by dressing in a floppy hat and huge sunglasses. "I love my job. Too much!" he once told us.
It's fair to say former Green Dragon and now The Oval pub manager Esther Sutton is one of Croydon's most popular people. But in 2013, her smiley, optimistic outlook won national recognition, as she was included in The Independent' newspaper's annual Happy List. for 2013.
