CRIME on the tram network in Croydon has fallen by two fifths since last year, according to new statistics.

TransportWatch, a joint partnership between Croydon Business Improvement District (BID), the Metropolitan Police, British Transport Police and transport operators, show the 40 per cent drop in the first quarter of this year on London Tramlink services.

There has also been an 18 per cent drop in crime on Croydon's buses, while the number of cycle thefts has also dropped by 41 per cent (from 99 to 58 crimes in total).

Some of the measures TransportWatch has introduced include the use of dedicated security patrols, higher visibility of policing on trains and trams, and greater CCTV monitoring on public transport and at stations and stops.

On buses, robbery and violent offences are down by 70 per cent and 17 per cent respectively and thefts on trams have fallen by exactly half.

Nick Baker, TransportWatch chairman, said: "We have been working hard to ensure that everyone who uses public transport in and around Croydon feels safe and confident throughout their journey.

"As these latest statistics show, the majority of journeys on public transport are incident free and we're keen to ensure the downward trend on reported crimes continues."
