Joel Ward: I enjoyed central midfield role for Crystal Palace

CRYSTAL Palace defender Joel Ward has given a slight insight into his time in central midfield for the Eagles. The former Portsmouth man showed his versatility during the Christmas period and in January by playing an anchorman role with Mile Jedinak – and he didn't disappoint either. But in recent weeks he has reverted to right-back following the signings of Joe Ledley and return of Kagisho Dikgacoi from injury. "I had played there before, a few on and off games at Portsmouth, in that kind of holding role," Ward told the Advertiser. "I enjoyed it but obviously the main thing is I had to go in and help the team. "If that means going in there, I'm happy to do that. You need a few games to get back into the swing of it and adjust to the positional sense. "It's a different way of fitness too, with the different runs. They are two very different positions (to right-back). "But you to adapt quickly to it and because you're playing against some of the top teams in the world and some very good players. "You have to get on with it, keep playing and keeping it simple. "I am happy to be back at right-back. It is my preferred position. I think I'm more suited there but I did enjoy it in centre midfield and I'm happy I could do a job and play some good games in there. "It was enjoyable to do that and get a taste of it in the Premier League."
