Croydon Conservatives hope long-standing councillor Dudley Mead will serve a second term as mayor after nominating him as its candidate.
The council's Mayoralty & Honorary Freedom sub-committee met last night to receive nominations, with Labour also putting forward their own candidate, Broad Green councillor Manju Shahul-Hameed.
Cllr Mead previously held the position 25 years ago and his wife Cllr Margaret Mead has also served in the post.
Cllr Mead has announced his intention to step down from his post as cabinet member for housing after the May elections.
He has represented Selsdon and Ballards ward for 34 years.
Cllr Mead said: "It is 25 years since I was last mayor. I am looking forward to being in control of a meeting in the council chamber; the last time the roof had collapsed and meetings couldn't be held there.
"I have been on the front bench both in control and opposition since 1982 and I think it is time to step back from that role."
The position will be determined by the results of the local elections in May.
The current Mayor of Croydon is Sanderstead's Conservative councillor Yvette Hopley.
