THERE will be a number of road closures as the crane which snapped on the IYLO building after it was 'struck by lightning' is removed.
The crane was damaged in the brief storm on Saturday afternoon and 15 fire engines, more than 50 firefighters, police helicopters, and stand-by ambulances called to the scene.
Road closures will be put in place from midnight tomorrow and will remain in effect throughout Wednesday.
As well as the northern end of Wellesley Road, closures will be in place between Station Road and St James' both ways and on St James' Road from Tavistock Road to the junction with Whitehorse Road.
A Croydon Council spokesman said it is hoped the work will be completed by Wednesday evening but that drivers should check in advance before travelling on Thursday.
No one was hurt in the crane collapse but firefighters were ready to evacuate homes in the surrounding area had the crane fallen any further.
The IYLO building – now known as the Island development - is expected to be completed by 2015 but it is not yet known whether the crane incident will set the project back at all.
The Advertiser has contacted the developer but is yet to receive a response.
