POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a 43-year-old man was killed in a hit and run in Shirley yesterday (Sunday).

The man was using a pedestrian crossing on Wickham Road, near the junction with Spring Park Road, when a dark BMW travelling east collided with him, shortly before 8.50pm.

The car failed to stop and police are trying to trace it and the driver.

London Ambulance Service and representatives from the Air Ambulance attended the scene, though the pedestrian was pronounced dead at 9.28pm.

Officers believe they know the man's identity and are trying to trace his next of kin.

Investigators from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, based in Catford, are appealing for anyone in the area at the time of the collision who witnessed it to come forward.

They say the car would have sustained damage to its front during the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to call 0208 258 1574 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
