BOOKMAKER Paddy Power has been given permission to extend one of its seven Croydon betting shops, despite objections from residents.
The national chain was given the go ahead to expand its outlet at 1421 London Road, Norbury, to include units 1421-1423, at Croydon Council's licensing sub-committee yesterday – but the move was opposed by residents' groups and ward councillor Maggie Mansell.
Cllr Mansell, in her submission to the committee, feared the impact a larger betting shop would have on "vulnerable adults", by putting an "unfair temptation" to risk cash under their nose.
She also cited the number of bookies already in the area, saying "there are sufficient gambling establishments within a mile radius".
Norbury Green Residents' Association (NGRA) also opposed the application, casting doubt on whether the number of customers the branch attracted justified a larger store.
They said: "The NGRA fear there is a risk that with a higher visual presence, more people will be enticed to gamble, in the vain hope of a quick financial gain."
Their submission added: "A high percentage of households in Norbury are vulnerable and experiencing financial stresses due to cuts in income, benefits, unemployment and other price rises."
"The more they are enticed to gamble, the more they compound their vulnerability."
Paddy Power has seven shops in Croydon; in Church Street, George Street and North End in the town centre; Westow Street, Upper Norwood; and three along London Road, in West Croydon, Thornton Heath, and Norbury.
