THREE people who tried to rob a vulnerable man in a honey-trap attack which left him bleeding and shaken have been sentenced at Croydon Crown Court. Reece Mummery, 18, along with his uncle Roger Miller, 29, and a 17-year-old girl all played a role in the attack on the 24-year-old outside Norwood Junction station on February 8. The court heard how the 17-year-old had arranged to meet with the victim after asking him to provide her with cigarettes. She then acted as a lookout for Mummery and Miller as they ran out of a nearby alleyway, headbutting the victim and trying to take his phone. The victim managed to escaped by jumping on a 226 bus to Crystal Palace where a member of the public noticed him bleeding, shaking and injured and decided to call for help. Police arrested Mummery and the girl, who cannot be named because of her age, at his home in Howard Road on Thursday 20 February. They were both charged on the same day. Miller was also arrested and charged later the same day after the girl admitted during her interview he had been hiding in Mummery's flat. She initially denied arranging to meet the victim but changed her story during her police interview. Mummery was sentenced to three years and nine months in a youth offending institute on July 29, while his uncle, who lives in St. Leonard-on-Sea in East Sussex was given five years in prison. The girl, from Streatham, was served with an 18 month Youth Rehabilitation Order with supervision and a tagged curfew for six months and ordered to carry out 120 hours of community service. Detective Constable Billy Clough from Croydon CID said: "This was a vicious attack and attempted robbery on a vulnerable adult. The three defendants set up an honey-trap and thought that the victim would be an easy target - they had no qualms in leaving him bleeding and shaken. "I am satisfied with the result of our investigation and hope that this sentence sends a strong message - we will pursue anyone committing robberies and will bring them before a court."
