TV PICKS: Jack Bauer returns in 24, and a look at the wild side of Essex

A LOOK at some TV highlights for the next seven days...
24: Live Another Day, Sky 1, Wednesday, May 7, 9pm Jack is back and this time he's in London. Kiefer Sutherland's rogue counter terrorist agent Jack Bauer has been deep undercover since we last saw him in 2010 but he emerges in London just in time to try to foil a plot to assassinate the US president while he's visiting Blighty. Jack's efforts are complicated by the fact that the president is his old friend James Heller(William Devane) whose daughter Audrey (Kim Raver) Jack became intimate with before. Also returning is Jack's right-hand woman, tech expert Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub, looking like Lisbeth Salander from the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo movies these days) who has become disgruntled by the US authorities and is reluctant to help Jack this time round. 24 broke the mould when it first started eight seasons ago with its 'real time' approach and split screen visuals and although this series will only be 12 episodes this time round, expect it to be as tense and addictive as ever.Britain's Natural World: The Wild Places Of Essex, BBC4, Saturday, May 3, 7pm A welcome repeat of Robert Macfarlane's excellent documentary about the wilder side of Essex. Beyond the clichés and stereotypes that abound about the county, Macfarlane finds some remote (and not so remote) spots that show Essex to have a strange, uncompromising natural beauty that's different to the picture postcard Britain of tourist brochures. He visits wild woods, marshland and sparse beaches encountering barn owls, seals and peregrine falcons on his way, bringing eloquence and enthusiasm to this televisual essay.Generation War: Our Mothers, Our Fathers, BBC2, Saturday, May 3, 9.30pm After a strong start last week, this epic drama continues its look at how the coming of World War Two affected ordinary people in Germany. It follows five twentysomethings and what happens to them during the war, their fortunes inextricably entwined with the successes and failures of the Nazi war machine. In this second of three 90-minute episodes, the full horror of war is shown on the Russian front as the German advance falters. In The Flesh, BBC3, Sunday, May 4, 10pm The zombie drama with a twist returns as we're reunited with Kieren Walker, a teenager suffering from PDS, partially deceased syndrome, who's trying to reintegrate himself back into the community. In his hometown of Roarton, Kieren is keeping his head down, working at his local pub and trying to earn money for his escape fund, while in the wider world the radical Pro-Living Party is gaining more power and influence, prompting a backlash of PDS extremism connected to the Undead Liberation Army. Hannibal, Sky Living, Tuesday, May 6, 10pm Set before Manhunter/Red Dragon and way before Silence Of The Lambs, Hannibal traces the early career of the screen's favourite high-brow cannibal. Back for a second series after an acclaimed first run, Hannibal explores the relationship between FBI special investigator Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) as they collaborate on a variety of cases and we begin to see hints of what the latter is capable of. Dancy and Mikkelsen proved a powerful pairing in the first season with Laurence Fishburne bringing gravitas as Jack Crawford, head of behavioural sciences at the FBI.Catch Up Follow the last sex, violence and political shenanigans in Game of Thrones (Charles Dance, pictured right) on Sky On Demand; Will the murderous truth catch up with hapless Lester Nygaard in the excellent Fargo? Catch up with 4OD.
