St Pancras art compared to Tetris began life in Waddon warehouse

A STRIKING Tetris-like art installation which dominates the entrance to St Pancras Station was produced in a warehouse in Waddon.

David Batchelor's Chromolocomotion was put together in a unit at James Business Park, in Mill Lane, and will be the first thing passengers from places like Paris, Brussels and Leicester see when they arrive in London.

The Scottish artist's explosion of colour was unveiled last Monday (April 7), as the latest part of Terrace Wires – a rotational art space similar to the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square.

The huge multi-coloured work combines 44 perspex sheets, slotted together in a geometric formation, and is the result of almost three years' work for David.

The Hackney-based artist told the Advertiser: "It's the biggest installation I've ever done. The process of making it was relatively simple but there were 44 different parts which were produced all over the world, so the process of getting it all ready was quite lengthy.

"My first sketches were probably about three years ago, so it's taken a while. I am very happy with how it has turned out."

His installation will remain in place for the next six months, but even in its first week it has drawn comparisons to a classic 1980s arcade game.

"A lot of people are saying it looks like Tetris," David added.

"I have never played it. The last computer game I played was on a machine in a pub and it was called Space Invaders, but I've looked it up since and I've got no problem with the comparison."

David, 58, is known for his sculptural installations which marry colour with material leftovers of modern life.

He said: "It doesn't really mean anything, it's just an invitation to look at that space.

"It is pointing at the idea of a stained-glass window. Hopefully it adds to the grandeur of that cathedral-like building."
