A TEENAGE boy was stabbed in the chest at Arena tram stop in Croydon on Tuesday evening. British Transport Police (BTP) said the 17-year-old was walking through the area with friends when he saw an altercation taking place on the Elmers End-bound platform just before 7.45pm. The victim, who is from Croydon, was stabbed several times in the chest and rushed to hospital. A BTP spokesman said his condition is now stable, and his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. Officers are checking CCTV footage from the tram stop and nearby cameras, and patrols will be stepped up to try to trace witnesses. "As part of our enquiries, we are looking to establish a full picture of the circumstances, including what took place before, during and after this incident," said Detective Chief Inspector Simon Taylor, the senior investigating officer. "Were you passing through the area at the time? Did you see anything? I'm urging anyone with information to come forward and speak to us. "Frightening offences like this are very rare on the tram network but, when they do occur, are treated with the utmost seriousness." Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact British Transport Police, quoting log B8/LS of 6/2/2013. Alternatively, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
