Broken lift leaves Addiscombe pensioner feeling 'like a prisoner'

A PENSIONER is livid with Croydon Council after being told the lifts to her top-floor flat will be out of order for six weeks.

Patricia Briggs, 77, who has had both knees replaced and is waiting for a hip replacement, must now climb 30 steps to her council-owned block of flats at Squire Court, in Morland Road, Addiscombe.

She was told by a council officer last week they would not be fixed for six weeks.

The former printing office worker, who has lived in the block for 20 years, says she had to buy her food in bulk for at least the next month as she does not feel she can leave the flat.

"I feel like a prisoner," she said. "My son took me to the supermarket to get me £100 worth of food the other day but it's got to last me a long time.

"I can't live like this, I'm going to be very miserable.

"Why does it take six weeks to fix them? I pay a lot of money to the council for my flat and there's certain things you expect to work."

A council spokesman apologised to the residents of Squire Court for the inconvenience.

He added: "The lift requires a new lift controller, which is a major component.

"As the part is now obsolete, we have been left with no option but to have this manufactured."
