Crystal Palace defender Damien Delaney says 'forget Chelsea - Cardiff is the big game'

DAMIEN DELANEY has targeted another year in the Premier League with Crystal Palace, after once considering giving up on the English game nearly two years ago.

The Irishman was deemed surplus to requirements at Ipswich Town before he was signed by Palace in August 2012, but has proved his worth in the top flight with a number of strong performances.

Delaney, who will turn 33 in July, was close to moving to Major League Soccer in the United States until former Palace boss Dougie Freedman convinced him to join the Eagles.

And now following last weekend's win against Chelsea, Delaney wants to get their survival job done and push on further next season.

"I'm not done yet," he said. "But none of that matters at the moment..

"We've put ourselves in a position now and I just hope we can get it done and then I'll tell you how great it's been.

"If this club could stay up, what it would do to have another year in the Premier League, it would be amazing.

"We didn't pop the champagne bottles last Saturday, we have still got a long way to go and we have a massive challenge this weekend.

"If we can go to Cardiff and get a good result and put even more daylight between us with less games, we give ourselves a hell of a chance.

"It was great against Chelsea, it was a bonus and people didn't expect us to get anything but for me this week is the one."

Of course, victories against one of the best sides in the Premier League, not to mention a side going for the league title, don't come around too often, so surely the players would have been ecstatic in the changing room?

Wrong. Delaney admitted that obviously they were pleased to win but insisted their focus immediately turned to tomorrow's clash.

"You'd be surprised, we're not the type of group to do that," he said. "Obviously we came back in and said 'well done' to each other like we do after every game but we don't get carried away.

"We weren't overly excited, the first thing we said when we walked in was 'Cardiff next week'.

"That's the one for us. It's going to be a good game and they are scoring a lot of goals at the moment.

"Going there is always difficult. There will be a great atmosphere and we're getting into the business end of it now.

"Come May 11, as long as we've got more points than three other teams, we don't care.

"That's what we're looking for, whether it's 33 points or 43 points, we don't care.

"We have four massive games now, huge games against Cardiff, Villa, Everton and West Ham.

"If we can put in a good shift and really put in the effort like we did against Chelsea, which we have done all season, then we'll get results.

"It's not a case of where we were getting tanked all year and then big teams roll into town and we show up."
