Green Party objects to 40mph plan for Coulsdon Bypass

THE Green Party has objected to plans to increase the speed limit along the Coulsdon bypass from 30 to 40mph. London Assembly member Darren Johnson has written to TfL, which is consulting on the proposal, claiming a change in the speed limit would increase the risk of accidents. He said: "TfL's rationale for the change is that 'typical existing traffic speeds are closer to 40mph than 30mph throughout Farthing Way'. "If this is the case, the existing 30mph speed limit should have been properly enforced before TfL proposed adjusting the speed limit to accommodate speeding motorists. "This sends a terrible message of tolerance for those who break the rules on our roads." TfL's plan would extend the 40mph speed limit about 600 metres north to a point close to the footbridge crossing the road.
