April Fool: Channel 4 isn't ready for a Croydon Facelift

YESTERDAY, we told you how Channel 4 is set to commission a new reality television show called Croydon Facelift. Sadly - despite this being less ridiculous than Joanna Lumley meets Will i.am, which last week actually made it onto primetime TV (no, really) - the show, billed as a mash-up of Dragons' Den, The Apprentice, Grand Designs, Big Brother and the Krypton Factor, will never see the light of day. Why? Check yesterday's date... Programme makers allegedly wanted to follow the borough as it is transformed by Westfield and Hammerson's £1 billion plan to redevelop the Whitgift Centre. Our article, meant as part-April Fool and part a wry, satirical take on regeneration in Croydon, said the series would see developers pitch ideas for a new building projects in Croydon, with viewers deciding which get built and which end up half-finished and slowly being covered in graffiti. The show would have been broadcast in two languages - Chinese and Arabic - to cater for those buying the developments, the Advertiser cheekily claimed. First time buyers in this country need not worry, however, as the show's producers promised that up to 15 per cent of homes featured on the programme will be affordable. Croydon Facelift would have featured a section called "Whose line is it anyway?" during which viewers will have to guess which area Mayor of London Boris Johnson will promise to extend the tram to next. The BBC declined to comment on rumours that it is planning a rival fly-on-the-wall documentary called The (Empty) Office. Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Tony Robinson had been lined up to present the show, we claimed. Croydon born super-model Kate Moss was approached, but said she was too busy doing a series of articles with the Daily Mail about her statue in the soon to be developed Whitgift Centre, in reference to the national newspaper falling for the Advertiser's last April Fool. This year's jape was read by thousands of visitors to our website and met with a positive response. Anne Tierney posted on Facebook: "Well done Advertiser! Really Funny!"
