Twitter turns 8: What Croydon's Twitterati had to say in its first 140 characters (or less)

TWITTER has changed the way we interact with our friends, favourite celebrities and revolutionised how we find out news globally, nationally and locally. In Croydon, the ranks of the borough's prolific Twitterati are swelling. But what did they all make of it when the site, which now has more than 500million users, first emerged? To mark Twitter's eighth birthday tomorrow, the site has launched a new feature to help users find their first tweet. Here are a selection of the first 140 characters (or less) from some of Croydon's Twitter users.... Croydon Central MP Gavin Barwell (@GavinBarwellMP) took to the site to campaign for the future of Shirley Library. He said: "Save Shirley Library. Public meeting 7pm tomorrow night at Shirley Parish Hall. See you there." February 1, 2011. Croydon Advertiser editor Glenn Ebrey (@glennebrey) caught the bug in 2009 He tweeted: "I have just succumbed to the lure of Twitter. Facebook who?" Croydon North MP Steve Reed (@SteveReedMP), then leader of Lambeth Council, began by referring to himself in the third person. Mr Reed said: "Steve is learning how to Twitter." March 11, 2009. Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish (@ceo4tag) was still reeling after a disappointing result at the start of Dougie Freedman's tenure as Eagles boss. He said: "Still getting over saturdays result:( big game against Bristol next week, Looking to bring one or two in this week ." January 17, 2011. Croydon Labour leader Tony Newman (@CllrTony) took the opportunity to welcome his new flock. He said: "hello twitter its good to be here its been sometime since we have been together but look forward to hearing from you all soon." February 10, 2011. And Croydon's finest member of Another Level Dane Bowers (@danebowers) was just glad to finally join the revolution. He said: "Sorry it has taken so long to get this up and running - it's been a crazy week. Thanks for all your support." February 4, 2010.
