A 21-year-old man was arrested in Purley this morning on suspicion of murdering South Norwood man Michael Hunt.
Known as 'Irish Mike', the 37-year-old was found beaten and in a skip off Station Road on Saturday morning. He died in hospital hours later.
Police arrested a young man this morning in Purley and are holding him in custody.
Orginally from Waterford in Ireland, Mr Hunt moved to Croydon around six years ago.
A post-mortem began on Sunday but has yet to make any conclusions while the inquest into his death opened and adjourned today at Croydon Coroner's Court.
The father was found in a skip at around 7am on Saturday and was taken to Kings College Hospital with injuries to his head and body where he died at midday.
Officers from the homicide and major crime command believe the man was severely assaulted.
Detective Chief Inspector Diane Tudway said: "Michael Hunt was well known in the local community and I would urge anyone with information, or who may have seen Mr Hunt in the time prior to him being found, to come forward and speak to police.
"The information available to us at this stage leads us to believe that Mr Hunt was not the victim of a stranger or random attack. However, our enquiries continue.
"At this time our thoughts are with Michael's friends and family, both here in London and in Ireland."
Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room on 020 8721 4005. To remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Enquiries are ongoing.
