Croydon's libraries advertise no events for World Book Day

IT IS World Book Day today but Croydon's libraries have no events advertised online to mark it. On a day meant to promote the literature to children, there is a stark lack of promotion for events at the borough's tightly stretched libraries. Although a member of staff at Ashburton Library said there were some events planned, the libraries section of Croydon Council's website has no special events listed. The council signed an eight year contract to hand the running of library services over to John Laing Integrated Services (JLIS) last July. But JLIS was sold out to Carillion in October, a move that surprised council chiefs at the time. Library campaigners including Alan Wylie and Elizabeth Ash have accused Carillion of having no track record in library management. A spokeswoman for Carillion said there were planned events for World Book Day in Croydon's libraries but because a lot of them were for children they felt advertising online was unnecessary. She added that there were vouchers being handed out to children and that an author was visiting one of the libraries on Saturday.
