FIREFIGHTERS had to rescue two men from a house blaze in Thornton Heath last night (February 28).
They were called to reports of a fire at a house of multiple occupation on Melfort Road at approximately 10.15pm.
A man in his sixties was removed from the house unconscious and had to be taken to Croydon University Hospital.
Another conscious man in his fifties had to be rescued from the "large" fire but suffered a diabetic attack as firefighters carried him out of the house.
The fire, which is thought to have been started by a fault washing machine, damaged about 30 per cent of the first floor.
The two other occupants of the house at the time escaped before firefighters arrived and one had to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Fire engines from Norbury, Croydon and Woodside fire stations attended the scene and had put the fire out by approximately 11.18pm.
