THEY say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach and for Pamela and Roger Stockwell, the love of a good meal was what set them on the road to half a century of married bliss.

The South Croydon couple got married in the swinging sixties after meeting in their last year of university.

Mr and Mrs Stockwell have now been married 51 years and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 2013 by recreating their wedding photo.

Mrs Stockwell said: "We met because both of us did languages at university.

"At the time, I quite liked the look of the French lecturer. He came up to me once to ask me out but then Roger did too and that's how it started.

"I think we were both attracted by the quantity we could eat.

"We would meet in the university bar and eat copious lunches together."

Mrs Stockwell told her future husband he could not propose on one knee because it would make her giggle too much. They had a simple wedding and used the money they saved on a deposit for a house when she started work as a teacher and her husband worked for the post office.

Mr Stockwell said: "We were very careful before getting married and really knew we were compatible.

"Then we started a family; two girls and one boy. I think the turning point came when our oldest daughter decided to go to university in the US so we went to visit her once.

"We loved it so much we now travel there together all the time."

The couple got married at Croydon Register Office and after the ceremony posed for pictures in Queen's Gardens.

When their golden anniversary came about last year, the couple decided it would be a nice idea to recreate the picture.

However, on inspection the stone urn that was visible in the background 50 years ago was now covered in ivy.

After this was pointed out to the council, the ivy was cleared and Mrs Stockwell was presented with a bouquet of flowers to recreate her special day.
