CROYDON University Hospital has been awarded funding to take part in a major research project into lung disease.
The EU has released a total of £6.17 million for the international scheme which looks at treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other serious conditions.
Croydon Health Services, the trust which runs the hospital, will receive £230,000 to take part in the research, which spans nine countries across Europe.
The project, known as WELCOME, looks to develop new methods of monitoring, early diagnosis and treatment for patients with COPD, chronic heart failure, diabetes, anxiety and depression.
It will involve designing and testing wearable equipment that monitors vital signs.
The study will last four years and patients with lung disease will have the opportunity to test the devices.
It will be led by consultant Dr Roshan Siva and respiratory nurse Nikki Davies, two members of Croydon Respiratory Team.
Dr Siva said: "It's an incredible opportunity for Croydon to get involved in such a major, pan-European research project which has the potential to radically improve the way we monitor and treat people with serious health needs."
