PARTS of Croydon have been put on flood alert. Groundwater flooding could affect areas including Kenley, Purley and South Croydon in the coming days, with the level of the Caterham Bourne stretch of the River Wandle likely to swell due to the recent heavy rain. An Environment Agency warning states: "Groundwater levels have risen rapidly in the upper Wandle catchment in response to recent sustained and intense rainfall. "As a consequence groundwater levels, as measured at the Environment Agencys monitoring boreholes, indicate the potential for sustained flow within the Caterham Bourne." The warning goes on to add there is a "high level of confidence that initially, low lying roads and properties will be susceptible to flooding." Other areas listed as being at potential threat of flooding from the Bourne include Whyteleafe, Caterham, Beddington, and Carshalton.
