CROYDON University Hospital is to be inspected next month, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has confirmed.

It will be one of the first four hospitals to be subject to a strict observation by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Croydon Health Services, the trust that runs the hospital, was chosen after being identified as "at risk" under the new framework.

A panel, chaired by a senior clinician and led by some 20 or more nurses, doctors, managers and CQC inspectors, will look in detail at areas including A&E, maternity, paediatrics and outpatients.

Sir Mike Richards, the recently appointed Chief Inspector of Hospitals, urged patients to tell his team their experiences of care at the trust during an event at Fairfield Halls on September 17, the same day as the formal inspection starts.

"Of course we will be talking to doctors and nurses, hospital managers and patients in the hospital," he explained.

"But it is vital that we also hear the views of the people who have had care at Croydon University Hospital, or anyone who wants to share information with us

"This will help us plan our inspection, and so help us focus on the things that really matter to people who depend on this service

"We know there is too much variation in quality – these new in-depth inspections will allow us to get a much more detailed picture of care in hospitals than ever before."

The tougher check-ups were prompted by Sir Bruce Keogh's review of 14 NHS trusts with high mortality rates.

Croydon University Hospital, which was not among those hospitals, was selected to be in the first wave because of previous CQC reports criticising standards in maternity and A&E, as well as a damning survey of in-patients who rated the overall experience at just 4.8 out of a possible 10 points.

John Goulston, chief executive of Croydon Health Services, said the trust "welcomed" being among the first to be subject to the new-look inspections.

"This is an opportunity to demonstrate the recent improvements we have made, as well as receiving feedback on how we can improve patient experience and quality further," he added.

The five-day inspection will focus on eight key areas: A&E, maternity, paediatrics, acute medical and surgical pathways, care for the elderly, end-of-life care and outpatients.

A full report of their findings will be published by the CQC later in the year.

The public listening event will be held at the Arnhem Gallery, Fairfield Halls, Park Lane, at 6.30pm on September 17.

Anyone who wishes to attend is asked to fill in an online form at www.cqclisteningevents.org.uk or call 03000 616161.

People who have not registered are free to turn up on the evening.
