OASIS Community Learning has been selected to open a new school in South Norwood. The charity, which already runs three academies in Croydon, had been chosen as the council's preferred provider for a six form entry secondary school planned for Croydon Arena. The Department for Education is understood to have confirmed the choice today (Monday). Steve Chalke, founder of Oasis, said the sports focused school would be a "legacy" of last year's Olympic and Paralympic games. He added: "As a former South Norwood schoolboy myself, I am thrilled that Oasis has been given the opportunity to open Oasis Academy Arena. "As well as being a crucial means of tackling the deficit of school places in the area, the school will seek to make a positive impact on the entire local community." Oasis Academy Arena will be a split site school for students aged 11 to 18-years-old. Key Stage 3 students will be taught at the site of the former Croydon Adult Learning and Training (CALAT) Centre on Sandown Road, which will undergo full refurbishment. A new purpose-built school will be constructed at Croydon Arena for Key Stage 4 students. Plans for a school on the site had met with opposition from some residents amid concern over congestion and encroachment onto Metropolitan Open Land. Earlier this month it emerged the council were considering plans to build the secondary school on the site of nearby Ryelands Primary, with that school then moved to the Arena. Oasis' statement made no mention of the uncertainty surrounding the site. It said the school, which would focus on sports on health science, would work closely with those using the Arena to develop extracurricular activities for students. The charity runs Oasis Academy Shirley Park and Oasis Academy Coulsdon. Byron Primary School has also recently become Oasis Academy Byron. It said the new academy would be "fully-inclusive", with an admissions policy which run in conjunction with Croydon Council. Open evenings are to be held in the autumn. Mr Chalke said the school would open in September 2014.
